A marketing podcast and fringe show in one

The Marketing Matinée with MJO is a marketing podcast hosted by marketer and photographer Michael John Oliver.

Every episode, MJO and two guests from the world of marketing put on a show in three acts.

Each episode is different, comprising unique segments that explore the big, weird, and funny issues shaping modern marketing.

Clever, funny, and thought-provoking in equal measure, The Marketing Matinée is for those who think the SERIOUS BUSINESS OF MARKETING could stand to be a bit, well, silly.

How the show's structured

  • Number of hosts: 3 (MJO and two guests from the marketing sector)
  • Length of episodes: Approx 60 minutes
  • Format: An interview podcast in three "acts". Each act has a different gimmick designed to spur conversation.
  • Audio or Video: Audio first, but video used for social clips
  • Remote or in person: Remote first for ease of production.

What does an 'Act' look like?

The list is always changing, but here's a list of things we could cover in each episode:

Yeah/Nah: 10 yes-no questions from the world of marketing. Panellists first give their answers before discussing.

We Need to Talk: Both guests bring a marketing topic they NEED to talk about.

The Director has a Note: Listeners share horror stories about CEOs and MDs sticking their beaks into marketing's work.

Buy or Sell: A polarising topic in the world of marketing. Is the panel buying or selling it?

Rory or Bust: Is this a real Rory Sutherland quote or a convincing fake?

Pitches Get Stitches: Panellists get given a brief for the world’s worst marketing campaigns. What’s their pitch?

Job Jerking: We make light of a marketing job description that's is... dodgy.

LinkedIn Lunacy: Panellists bring in examples of LinkedIn posts that made them go wtf.

Marketing D&D: Panellists adopt a marketing character and go on an adventure, led by DM MJO.

What we look for in guests

  • Senior-level marketers or individuals from the creative space.
  • Variety of backgrounds. The show aims to be inclusive and not another 'Bunch of white blokes with mics talking shite'.
  • Energy! If you're a bit of a theatre kid, you'll do well on The Marketing Matinée.
  • Podcast-ready microphones and webcams: Audio quality is very important. This is a Matinée after all.

"I want to be on the show!"

Of course - you were made for the stage.

I'm always looking for new and exciting guests to feature on the show. Fill out the form and I'll be in touch.
